Matchmoving: The Technical Foundation VFX Can't Work Without
Matchmoving is one of the least glamorous VFX specializations — and one of the most essential. Without accurate matchmoving, no CG element can convincingly exist within live-action footage.
**What matchmoving actually is.** Matchmoving (also called camera tracking) recreates the exact movement and lens properties of a physical camera used during filming, within 3D software — allowing CG elements to be placed into a scene with correct perspective, parallax, and movement matching the original footage.
**Why this has to happen before almost everything else.** Nearly every VFX shot involving CG elements depends on accurate matchmoving as a foundational step — animators, lighting artists, and compositors all rely on the matchmove being correct before their work can convincingly integrate into the plate.
