Gaussian Splats: The New Way to Capture Reality in 3D

Gaussian splatting is one of the most talked-about breakthroughs in 3D capture technology — and it's already reshaping how real-world scenes get turned into usable 3D content.

**What it actually is.** Instead of building traditional polygon meshes, Gaussian splatting represents a 3D scene as millions of tiny, semi-transparent "splats" of color and light, reconstructed from a set of photos or video of a real location. The result is a remarkably photoreal, freely viewable 3D representation of real-world spaces.

**Why it's different from photogrammetry.** Traditional photogrammetry converts photos into a textured mesh, which often struggles with fine detail like foliage, hair, or reflective surfaces. Gaussian splats handle these notoriously difficult elements far more convincingly, and can be generated significantly faster from source footage.
